Bonar Bridge is a village on the north bank of the Kyle of Sutherland.  The river separates Sutherland from Ross and Cromarty and was originally crossed by an iron bridge built by Thomas Telford in 1812 but later replaced in 1871 and the current bridge was opened in around 1972. The village is one of the principal road junctions in Sutherland with routes heading east to Dornoch, north to Lairg and south to Ardgay and Ross-shire.  The village has its own golf club with a nine-hole course and it also makes an ideal base for a sporting holiday with many opportunities locally for salmon & trout fishing, shooting and walks (a 33 mile coast to coast route runs from Ardgay to the West Coast).  The community has banking facilities within post office, chemist, library and primary school as well as a number of local shops.  The nearest train station is in Ardgay, approximately 1 mile away with services to Wick and Thurso in the north and Inverness in the south.  Dornoch is approximately 13 miles away and Tain 15 miles away where professional, medical and banking services can be found along with schools and supermarkets.
